Sharm El-Sheikh, Nov. 11 2022 – One year after its launch at COP26 in Glasgow, the Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy presented the first results of its work at COP27 in Sharm El-
Sheikh, showcasing how it is ‘Enabling a sustainable value chain’.
The members of the Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy convened common positioning on key priority areas to accelerate sustainability of the global energy industry and presented position papers on Circular Design Criteria and on Net Zero/Decarbonization.
“The position papers on Circular Design Criteria and Net Zero/Decarbonization represent a concrete result of the Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy a year after its creation showing the effectiveness of a collaborative and multi-stakeholder approach in order to ensure the full sustainability of the energy sector along the whole value chain and achieve the decarbonization” said Salvatore Bernabei, Chairman of the Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy, and CEO of Enel Green Power.
The Global Wind Energy Council and the Global Solar Council, two founding members, co- hosted a Global Alliance for Sustainable Energy session at the Wind and Solar Pavilion (Blue zone, Area C, Pavilion 51) on November the 11th from 2 pm to 3.30 pm EET (12 pm – 1.30 pm GMT).
The position paper on Circular Design Criteria describes how circular economy and sustainability are the perfect enablers to solve one strategic need of all the manufacturing industries: to mitigate the environmental and social impacts of the raw materials usage in equipment manufacturing. The position paper focuses on the energy sector and the related ESG impacts and wants to boost the adoption of sustainable, circular and innovative design criteria and spreading the use of common sector tools.
The position paper on Net Zero/Decarbonization acknowledges the need for urgent action to decarbonize the power sector to limit the increase in global temperatures to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and to allow other sectors to transition to net-zero. In order to align with the net zero objective by 2050, the pathway for greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions reduction, including measurable short- and medium-term goals, needs to be clearly defined, based on common agreed grounds and science, and must be realistic and include Scopes 1, 2 and 3*
The event was focused on the presentations of the two position papers and was followed by an interactive panel session about the decarbonization of the energy sector and the supply chain. Representatives from Eletrobras, EDP, Enel Green Power, 3M, Iberdrola, and Student Energy participated to the session in person.
